Datenschutzerklärung

Stand: 25. Oktober 2026

1. Verantwortlicher

Verantwortlich im Sinne der Datenschutz-Grundverordnung (DSGVO) ist:
Jörn Ehmann
Hausburgstraße 13
10249 Berlin, Deutschland
E-Mail: kontakt@smart-smutje.app

2. Was auf deinem Gerät bleibt

Was dein Konto speichert

8. Deine Rechte

Privacy policy

Last updated: 25 October 2026. This is a translation; the German version above is the binding one.

Smutje plans recipes like projects. As much as possible happens on your device: recipes, pictures and settings stay in your browser. Data leaves your device only when you explicitly ask for something (for example, having a recipe read) or when you sign in. This policy tells you what goes where, why, and what rights you have.

Google in short: When you sign in with Google, Smutje receives only your Google account's identifier, your name and the address of your profile picture, and nothing else: no email address, no contacts, no files. Smutje uses them only to sign you in and to keep your kitchen the same across your devices. It does not share or sell them, and does not use them for advertising or to train AI models. The details are in section 6.

1. Controller

The controller under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is:
Jörn Ehmann
Hausburgstraße 13
10249 Berlin, Germany
kontakt@smart-smutje.app

No data protection officer is appointed, as none is required (Art. 37 GDPR, § 38 BDSG).

2. What stays on your device

Your imported recipes, their drafts and pictures, your kitchen (how many pans, pots and appliances you have), language, theme and whether you are signed in are kept in your browser's storage (localStorage and IndexedDB). They are not sent to us, unless you sign in: your imported recipes and their pictures then go to your account (see section 6). This storage is strictly necessary to provide the function you asked for (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). You can delete it at any time by clearing Smutje's site data in your browser. If you are asked to sign in while you have photographs of a recipe page in the import, they are kept in the same storage for up to an hour so that they are still there when you come back; they are removed once you are signed in, and are not sent to us.

Smutje uses no advertising or tracking services and embeds no third-party content, except your Google account's profile picture when you are signed in (see section 6). To measure audience, Smutje uses Cloudflare Web Analytics (see section 3).

3. Hosting and delivery

Smutje is delivered through Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, USA). When you open the app, Cloudflare processes technically necessary data, in particular your IP address, date and time, the address requested and your browser and device type, to deliver the pages and protect the service from abuse. To prevent costs from mass requests, the server counts requests per IP address over a short window (one minute); this counter is not stored permanently.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a secure and stable service (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (Art. 45 GDPR); the European Commission's standard contractual clauses in Cloudflare's data processing agreement apply in addition.

To measure audience, Smutje uses Cloudflare Web Analytics. It works without cookies and without storing or reading information on your device, and builds no cross-device profiles. Only aggregate figures are collected, such as page views, visitor counts, pages requested, country of origin, browser and device type and load times; your IP address is not stored for this. Only we see the results. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding how Smutje is used (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can object (see section 8); the simplest way is to block the Cloudflare script in your browser.

For troubleshooting, Cloudflare also keeps the logs (Workers Logs) of Smutje's server for calls to /api/*: time, route called, status code, usual request data such as the IP address, and error messages. Smutje does not write recipe text, photos or contact-form messages into these logs. How long they are kept depends on the Cloudflare plan; they are read only for troubleshooting and abuse prevention (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

During testing, access to Smutje is protected by Cloudflare Access. Cloudflare processes the email address or sign-in you confirm access with, to check that you belong to the test group (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

4. Having recipes read, written and explained (Smu)

Only when you explicitly ask for it does Smutje send content through its server to an AI service. A note beside every such button says so.

The recipient is Anthropic, PBC (548 Market St., PMB 90375, San Francisco, CA 94104, USA), whose model Claude processes the content. Requests pass through Cloudflare's AI Gateway, which does not log them. Smutje's server does not store the content. According to Anthropic, API inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days. They are kept longer, up to two years, only when a request is flagged as violating Anthropic's usage policy, or where the law requires it. Anthropic does not use API content to train its models.

Please do not send personal data in recipes or photos (for example, handwritten notes with names or addresses).

The legal basis is performing the function you asked for (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). The transfer to the USA is based on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses (Art. 46(2)(c) GDPR) in Anthropic's data processing addendum.

5. Having pictures drawn

When you choose “Make a picture”, only the recipe's title goes through Smutje's server to Cloudflare Workers AI, where an image model draws the picture. The picture is kept on your device and, when you are signed in, in your account (see section 6). The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR; for the transfer, see section 3. Pictures of your own that you choose go to no image model and to no one; they leave your device only when you are signed in, and then only to your account.

6. Account and signing in with Google (Google user data)

An account is optional. Its only purpose is to keep your kitchen (your station counts, the appliances your recipes added and the baking tins you saved) and your imported recipes, with their pictures, the same across your devices.

What Google user data Smutje accesses

Smutje asks Google only for the openid and profile scopes, which give it:

Smutje receives no email address and no access to Gmail, Contacts, Calendar, Drive or any other Google service, and cannot do anything at Google on your behalf.

How Smutje uses it

The identifier is used only to match you to the same account each time you sign in, so your kitchen and your recipes are the same on all your devices. Your name and picture are shown only to you, under You › Account, so you can see which Google account you are signed in with.

How Smutje stores it

Smutje's server (at Cloudflare, see section 3) stores only the identifier, together with your kitchen and your recipes with their pictures. Your name and picture address are kept only in a signed cookie and on your device, not on the server.

Sharing

Smutje does not share or sell data from your Google account, and does not use it for advertising, profiling or to train AI models. In particular, it never goes to Anthropic (section 4). Cloudflare processes it only as a processor, to run Smutje. Smutje's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Signing in

When you sign in, Smutje sends you to Google (for users in the EEA: Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland). Google tells Smutje an identifier for your Google account, your name and the address of your profile picture. No email address is requested. Google's privacy policy applies to signing in with Google.

What your account keeps

Your account keeps your Google account's identifier, your kitchen, your imported recipes with their pictures and a count of today's requests to Smu, and nothing else. Your name and profile picture are held only in a cookie and on your device, to show them to you; your browser loads the picture directly from Google, which gives Google your IP address. Storage is at Cloudflare (Durable Objects, and R2 for the pictures, see section 3).

For each imported recipe, your account keeps what your device keeps of it: the draft, the recipe as you approved it, the words of the page it came from, Smu's two cents, where it came from (pasted text, photographs, a link with its address, or a dish's name) and the language it was read in, and its picture, drawn by Smu or your own. As soon as you are signed in, your recipes and pictures go to your account, and from there to your other devices signed in to the same account; a recipe you delete is deleted from your account and those devices too. Your account keeps up to 500 recipes. A recipe made on the same device by another account never goes into yours. Please do not put personal data in recipes or pictures. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

The count records how many requests your account has made today to Smu, in two counts: requests to read, write or translate, which Smu passes to Claude (reading a text, a photo or a page, translating, turning it into steps, writing a recipe, explaining a step), and pictures, which Smu draws with Cloudflare Workers AI (a picture for a recipe), together with the day it belongs to. The day is the UTC day. After midnight UTC it no longer counts, and the next request replaces it with the new day's. It holds only the number, nothing a request sent. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; our legitimate interest is to limit what each request costs to a share per account and day.

Cookies

Cookie Purpose Duration
__Host-smutje-sign-in protects the round trip to Google and back 10 minutes
__Host-smutje-session keeps you signed in (signed; identifier, name, picture address) 30 days, renewed while you use it, at most until 12 months after signing in

Both cookies are strictly necessary to provide the sign-in you asked for (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). The legal basis for processing in the account is Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

Retention and deletion

Your data is kept until you delete your account, which you can do at any time under You › Account. Your kitchen, your recipes and their pictures are then deleted from the server. Kept under your Google account's identifier is only the time of the deletion, so that another device that is still signed in is signed out instead of restoring your account (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; our legitimate interest is that a deletion stays effective), and that day's count of requests to Smu until midnight UTC, so that deleting and signing in again does not start the day's share over (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, the same interest as for the count). As a sign-in lasts at most 12 months, the time of the deletion is removed 13 months after it, too. Signing out and deleting leave your kitchen and your recipes on your device.

Separately, you can remove Smutje's access to your Google account at any time at myaccount.google.com/connections. Smutje then receives nothing more from Google until you sign in again.

7. Contact form

When you write to us through the contact form in the imprint, Smutje's server sends your email address and your message to us by email through Cloudflare Email Routing (see section 3). The server does not store them. We use them only to answer your request and delete them once it is dealt with, unless the law requires us to keep them. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering requests (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) and, where your request aims at a contract, Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR.

8. Your rights

You have the right to

Contact the email address above. You can also complain to a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR), for example the one responsible for us:

Berliner Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit (Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information)
Alt-Moabit 59–61, 10555 Berlin, Germany
Phone: +49 30 13889-0
Email: mailbox@datenschutz-berlin.de
www.datenschutz-berlin.de

There is no automated decision-making within the meaning of Art. 22 GDPR. You are under no legal or contractual obligation to provide data; without an account and without Smu you can use Smutje entirely on your device.

9. Changes

When Smutje changes, we update this policy. The version published here is the one that applies.
